News

Hey everyone,
I know it's been a good long while since we've used this here blogger thing and I know there's a lot of stuff we've done and didn't write about. Well here's some things we're working on right now.

- We have a split 7" with sIngs coming out in March. It will be one of the first releases on our very own Chinquapin Records.
- We're currently finishing up the recording process for our next full length album, scheduled to be released on April 30th with help from our good friends at Community Records.
- We're preparing for a few January/February weekend tours with New Orleans' own Smiley With A Knife.
- We're currently booking our two summer tours (West and East coast). Got a hand that you or someone you know could lend? We'd adore your help.
- We're practicing lots of Big Moe songs.

Thanks for all of your support over this past year and a half. We're having a great time.

This weekend, baby...

OH YEAH! We're both super excited to come back home to Houston this weekend for Free Press Houston's Westheimer Block Party and meet up with friends and musicians all taking part in this amazing bi-annual festival that takes over the streets of Westheimer. This is the first time the festival is TWO DAYS LONG in quite some time now, and Houston's music is extraordinarily well represented here, with over 250 local acts playing as well as national bands, Dead Prez and Japanther. It's free all day and we'll be all over catching as many shows as we can possibly take in. We suggest you do the same.

Here's what last spring looked like (film by Osker Koronado):

FPH presents Westheimer Block Party Spring 09 from Osker Koronado on Vimeo.

This year, we're playing Outside Numbers (Main Stage) at 12:45pm on Saturday (FULL SCHEDULE HERE). So many bands deserve your ears.

We're also playing a West Fest kickoff party at Mangos on Friday night (put on by Flavored Woof) with local wonder: LIMB as well as Philly's own Grandchildren.

This is also why we love Houston and can't sleep at all.

Blue Nile

Hello friends,
This coming Saturday, we will be hitting up that Blue Nile with friends (and practice space-mates) Giant Cloud and Bionica featuring Sasha Masakowski. The show starts at 10pm and we just can't contain ourselves. We're uncontainable. Also, we have a few new songs and enticing surprises for you, so come get throwed with us. Last year, it was brought to our attention that no one here in NOLA knew what "throwed" means, so I have linked the word to it's definition. Enjoy the enlightenment. BOOM!

Free if you're 21+
$5 if you ain't.

HERE'S THE FACEBOOK EVENT. RSVP and invite your friends!

Chris Rehm solo show

Howdy there!
Just writing to let you know about a show that one half of Caddywhompus here has coming up. I don't play here in NOLA very often, so I don't feel so bad about blogging here about this. Next Tuesday, I will be playing at the Dragon's Den (upstairs) with local friends Gamma Ringo (who have some new recordings on their Myspace and Bandcamp) as well as Houston homies, Female Demand (who just got back from recording some tunes in Cali). I will be playing music that should sound like some sort of love child of my new folk stuff and my ambient work (such as the music in this video). But enough about me. Female Demand is a band I think you should meet. They are a bass and drum noise rock duo that has been sharing their ever-evolving sound with Houston and the surrounding areas for a few years now. They will win over your heart as easily as they will demolish your ears and/or steal your lover. They haven't visited New Orleans very frequently in the past, so catch this show, because they might not come back for a while. Here's a video of them playing a guerilla performance at this past Westheimer Block Party on a street corner (feelin' their style yet?). Expect this and much much more.

As of right now, we're thinking the order will be something like this (GR and I might switch):

Chris Rehm
Female Demand
Gamma Ringo

Doors at 9, show at 9:30 or so.
$5

We all hope to see you there.

Meet Paper Moons and Giant Cloud

Papermoons-Lazy Bones from Jordan Welker on Vimeo.

This coming tuesday (September 1st), Giant Cloud and we will be playing a show at Circle Bar with Austinian friends, Paper Moons. The experimental folk duo has been on tour since early August and will be stopping through NOLA on their way back home and we want to share their music with you and your friends. Above is a video for their song "Lazy Bones" off of their full length, 'New Tales', put out on Team Science Records. Here's where they've been.

Giant Cloud is a new band on Park The Van Records that recently moved here to New Orleans and here's what they have to say for themselves:
"Giant Cloud condensed somewhere over Lincoln Parish, North Louisiana in the summer of love, 2008. That same summer, a sweaty, overcrowded Ford Windstar named Windy caravaned most of them through the triumphs and trials of the great American West as they busked their way from and back again to Ruston. Slightly dazed and confused, each brought back their own story, abstract sunburn and new love for the freedom of an open highway. They came home to a new house never lacking people willing and ready to play music, a new music room with an absurd amount of outlets and a whole maze of house in which to experiment with new things. Impressed with their own perception, they decided to live the life of traveling cantantes, touring the universe inciting dance riots and spreading the gospel of soft/loud/soft/loud rock 'n' roll."

Here's video of them live:

Sound like fun? Come thru this coming tuesday, September 1st at Circle Bar at 9 or 10 pm or something.

bAk TwO Sckoowl

Word. It's been a long long while since we posted something on here. I also left you hanging about the last 3 days of the tour. Well they went great. The rest of our summer was pretty grand too. We worked hard on tour and then chilled hard in Houston for the remainder. We are now headed back to NOLA where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. We're super excited about this school year and what we have planned. Hopefully we can pull a few of them off. One of the plans we have is this show right here.

Join us, Smiley With A Knife, and Big Rock Candy Mountain for this back to school show. Also, our friend Zack Smith will be there photographing those who attend in a unique portrait light-box he constructed for a project he's working on: to capture this new post-Katrina music community in it's early stages. Remember, this Saturday is the 4 year anniversary of Katrina. Come out and show your support for the bands and the community.

kisses,
chris

Day nineteen - Nashville, TN (BOOTY BAY!)

We woke up at The Swamp and after leaving a note and tee shirt on the table, hit the road in search of food. We finally came across a local pizza place that seemed to be the only place in the city that was hoppin' off the chain. We had some deep dish pizza that ruld and then we got in the car to head to Nashville. After another mind-numbing car ride, we arrived super early in Nashville, so we chilled at a Borders and sean drank some coffee and read some magazines while I was busy trying to steal a huge poster advertising for the blu-ray release of Gran Torino. That movie sukd. Eventually we got the word from Tyler from Gnarwhal that we could head over to the house venue known to the world as Booty Bay. I grabbed some Schlotzsky's on the way. We showed up and were pleased to see a large group of kids hanging around outside waiting for the show to start. We met up with the infamous Gnarwhal and met a lot of the kids at the show. I couldn't finish a half of my sandwich, so i gave the other half away. First to hit the stage was a new band in the area called Put 'Er There and they played a super awesome heavy et that lasted about 10 mins. They were sweet. The next band to play was a group called Diesel Seas and they blew me and sean (and others, i'm sure) away. Their noisy, technical proggy-hardcore sound was perfect for the tiny, sweaty basement we were all crammed into. After them came Gnarwhal and (as expected) this band was fantastic. Their both familiar and unfamiliar sound and emotion was a wonderful thing to see and hear. They have this great sound composed of major-chord metal with intense technical sections and heavy breakdowns that collectively, is something I miss in modern heavy music. They finished and Jesse (guitar) let everyone know that we were up next (last) and that they should stay and donate/buy our stuff. Well put and well received. We played to a decent sized crowd that were all super enthused to hear us for the first time live. We played one of the hottest (temperature) sets of the tour as well as one of my favorites. A lot of kids picked up tees and cds and that made the already awesome trip even more worth our while. We were offered a place to stay at our new friend Dree's house (sorry if i spelled that totally wrong) and jesse joined us for the after party, because as R.Kelly so wisely stated, "after the show, it's the after party". We played darts, sat in a halfpipe in their backyard, skated on their porch, talked about rats in unusual places, and partied our patooties off until about 3 am and then we all simultaneously crashed.

Day eighteen - Carbondale, IN (Lost Cross)

We left the windy city and took a drive to carbondale whilst being blown around on the freeway. We arrived at the house venue, Lost Cross, a few hours early and they were more than happy to have us come over and chill. We watched some Predator and checked out the historic house (it's been a punk house-venue since the 80s and is still miraculously in working condition). When we went to the basement to check out where we would be playing, we noticed a corner with standing water. Funny. It hasn't rained there in about 2 weeks. Well, the time came to load in and we did so through a window-sized entry way right near the mysterious puddle and brought our stuff to the stage area. We were to play first and after a sufficient amount of people showed up, we started making noise and began our set. It was a fun, dirty, and energetic set that people seemed to be down with. Afterwards we met Matt (from the Swamp who helped us book this show) and some other locals, and we spent some time sharing experiences and opinions before the second band, Liar Birds (super nice guys) started. We then raced inside once they began. They played an amazingly tight and powerful pop-punk set that impressed both sean and me (while not normally being particular fans of the genre). After everything was over, Matt invited us over to the Swamp, where we would be sleeping, to have a little feast with him and his homies. We did and it was delicious.

Day sixteen & seventeen CHICAGO!

Chilled with new friends Benny and Moses.
Chilled with old friend Dani.
Ate some ok to poor pizza.
Had some bomb-ass mexican food.
Played at Ronny's and it went something like this.

This puts it all too well.

Day fIfteen - 6/26 Village Green Records (Muncie, IN)

We woke up to the sound of knocking on our bloody motel door and were threatened to be charged for another day if we didn't check out soon. we packed up our bags and left. we then stopped by Village Green Records (where we would be playing later that night) and checked in with Travis, the head honcho of the wonderful little independent record store. We checked out the store and chatted about what was going to go down later on that night (once again, another band bailed), and then he suggested we check out the little forest and some greenhouses (one had the world's largest collection of orchids!), so we did and it ruled. Then we ran over to Ball State University's library and stole some internet. I jumped around on some things that were fun to jump around on and then we grabbed some coffee. Soon it was time to get back to VGR an get ready for the show. We were greeted by John and Meagan of Sky Thing, Travis, and some other locals helping out with setting up the outside stage and making sure everything runs smoothly. We started setting up slowly (as was Travis' suggestion, so we could give kids some time to show up), he started dj'ing and his friends started setting up cameras to film the show (Travis' hope is to make a little documentary-type thing about starting and running your own independent record store to inspire others who might be interested). At about 9pm, we took to the stage (grass in the front of the store) and Travis called all the kids who were sitting nearby but were not near the stage area, to the front and we began. We had a great time and played a decent show considering it was an outside show and we haven't done that very often. People were down, we got donations and sold a good amount of merch. It was awesome seeing people come out to check out two out of town bands they probably never heard before. Sky Thing began setting up and played an awesome and intriguing set that attracted a few more fans off the street. Their music was trance-inducing and their films projected behind them were a great addition to the show. After the show was over, we helped Travis clean up and went to a bar nearby and drank and talked for a good two hours with Travis and Sky Thing. We then attempted to pick up some more alcohol and get a change of scenery. After a while, we succeeded and made our way back to VGR, where we would be staying that night. We stayed up till the sun came up watching Pump up the Volume and the funniest episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm that I had ever seen. I took a bite of a Steak and Shake burger just to see what it was like. YUMZ!

Day Fourteen - Bflo to Muncie, Indiana

We woke up late and made some eggs over at Nancy and Tom's and waited for the rain to stop before we packed up our bags into the car. The rain never stopped nor let up for quite some time, so we just got soaked and loaded all of our stuff in the truck and left. We planned on driving halfway or so and stop at a rest stop to sleep, but our GPS thing took us through a whole bunch of back roads where no rest stop was present. We ended up making it to Muncie around midnight and after I called about ten motels in the area and after all of them turned me down because of their lack of vacancy, Sean made his first call. He called the Muncie Inn and after Sean asked if they had any open room for tonight, the clerk's retort went something like "what time is it?". Sean stated that it was in fact midnight and yes, a room for tonight would be what we were looking for. We were offered a room for $30 and couldn't pass it up (although at a price like that, I feared for the worst). We got pretty much what i was expecting: gross room, stale cigarette smell, a bathroom that had spiderwebs all over it, the TV left of a PPV porn channel, and blood (yes, blood) smeared near the door handle and lock on the inside of the door (a pic of this will be uploaded asap). We slept ok that night.

Day Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen in Buffalo, NY

a_relative_term
Shapes of States
A Hotel Nourishing

We left NYC at around 10 am and after a beautiful drive over the mountains and through the woods that inspired some Fleet Foxes jammzzz, we arrived in Buffalo just in time for dinner with my aunt Nancy and uncle Tom.
Delicious tacos were whipped up by T himself and ice cold XXs were offered to us to wet our whistle (in a commonly dry household) after a long drive.

We stayed up eating, talking, and playing music (after a wonderful trip to the always overwhelmingly shitty Guitar Center). We were given warm comfortable beds to sleep in (YES! BEDS!) and we slept like little baby kings that night. In the morning, we were awoken by Tom and the scent of delicious breakfast burritos. After the filling and delicious breakfast, we boys got on the road to Niagra Falls and took in the sights and smells of the border.
After taking a few rockin' press photos and once we finally fished Sean out of the base of the falls (don't get me started), we began our trek back to Buffalo to check out Pavlov's Togs and "the strand" of the area.

We were super stoked to see my uncle's shop for the first time. It ruled.

We roamed the streets, shipped off a few orders of "EPs", made inserts for "EPs", and chilled at Tom and Nancy's wonderful house until they came home from work. After another delicious dinner (ravioli tonight!), another bone-rattlin' jam sesh, and a few calls back home, we hit the hay with our bellies bursting at our buttons, content as can be.

The next morning, Tom woke us up and we got ready (with the help of some wonderful french toast) to go on another tour of Buffalo with the dopest tour guide ever. We stopped by Sunday Skateboards, ate some falafel and tunisians, chatted with the guys and gal at Hero Design about how lame Wilco is and how to kick bandmates out of the band while still on the road, checked out Nietzsche's, took the scenic route, went back to the crib, worked on finalizing the July 4th show, picked up some pizza and then packed up the truck and left for the show. We arrived at the venue before the other bands, but were quickly greeted by the members of a_relative_term, Shapes of States, and A Hotel Nourishing, one by one over the next hour or so. a_relative_term took to the stage first with their melodramatic psych-folk and opened the show very well. Next, we bum rushed the stage and the frenzy began. A local off-center arts magazine, Artvoice (who wrote a slightly factually incorrect preview for the show earlier) was there and happened to film some of the show. Check it!

At one point, the bartender yelled out from the back, "Why you gotta be so FUCKIN loud?! I'll shut you down", and we all shared a good jolly laugh. We pushed through the set and split the sea for Shapes of States to deliciously trance us into a mindset that would leave us unprepared for the jaw-dropping jibber jabber of the duo, A Hotel Nourishing. We sold a fair amount of merch (especially the new tees!) and bid our farewells to our hosts with maximum hospitality. It was a good night. On the way back to Nancy and Tom's, we stopped at Tim Hortons and grabbed some delicious donuts and hot cocoa. And to sleep we went.

June 23, 2009

Day 10 - 6/21 (Brooklyn, NY)

you will never believe what we did when we woke up in Brooklyn on the day of our show. seriously it was unbelievable. then oh my god the craziest thing happened later in the afternoon. theeen we unloaded our gear into Union Pool and it started to rain. so it was 9 oclcock(when we were suposed to go on) and nobody had showed up. alas, by 915 there was a good crowd and all the stress vanished. and get this. the soundgirl was CUTE AND FRIENDLY!?!? and from new orleans so we talked and had drinks after the show. and then we went to wesley's favorite bar "the trophy bar" and i saw the tambourine player from the no-name band we saw a Grasslands. Chris forgot to mention the best part of last night. we were watching the no-name band's set and on their last chord of the last song, the singer(big long-haired hippie guy) held out a super high note for like a minute straight. then as soon as he ended people started to cheer and clap. he was about to say thank you into the mic but he slipped and ate shit really hard. he landed on his guitar and took the micstand with him. it sounded like this. DOOOOOSH!!!!

June 21, 2009

Day Nine - 6/20 Day Off (Brooklyn, NY)

Chilled hard with Wesley and roamed the streetz of the huge mango. Saw Kim Gordon and got lost in Chinatown/Little Italy/all over. Went to Grasslands and saw UME and a band without a name. Saw Kim Gordon again. Watched some Twin Peaks and another episode of 30 Rock. Slept on the hardwood floor again. Walked in the rain and my shoes and socks got soaked and will soon smell up my luggage bag.
